Taste of Chicago

There are now 49 confirmed cases in an E. coli outbreak in Michigan (Michigan E. coli), Ohio (Ohio E. coli), Georgia (Georgia E. coli), Indiana, Kentucky, New York and Utah linked to Kroger ground beef and Nebraska ground beef components. Amarillo, Texas IHOP Salmonella Outbreak
According to the Amarillo Department of Public Health, at least 10 people have contracted Salmonella infections after eating at the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in Amarillo, Texas.
Michigan and Ohio E. coli Outbreak and Ground Beef

Minnesota Preschool E. coli Outbreak

E. coli - Washington E. coli Outbreak Associated with Lettuce

CDC Salmonella Saintpaul Investigation

FDA Warning Regarding Tomatoes
The Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers in New Mexico and Texas that a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes. Read the FDA Warning.
Texas Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
Texas health officials have confirmed 21 cases in Texas since mid-April, including cases in Harris, Fort Bend, Dallas, Tarrant, Hays and Cameron counties. New Mexico Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tomatoes
The New Mexico Department of Health has announced that an outbreak of Salmonella is likely caused by eating uncooked tomatoes. So far, 31 people from seven counties in New Mexico have been sick with a strain of Salmonella called Salmonella Saintpaul. [Update: 73 confirmed Salmonella Saintpaul cases in New Mexico.] Several

Nebraska E. coli Outbreak Associated with Roast Beef
Nebraska E. coli outbreak associated with roast beef has sickened at least 14 people. Epidemiological evidence indicates that those sickened ate the roast beef at a private event at a Sarpy County reception hall on March 26, 2008. La Mesa, California Chipotle Hepatitis A Outbreak
At least eighteen people have contracted hepatitis A after eating at the La Mesa Chipotle in San Diego County, California. The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) and County Department of Environmental Health (DEH) are investigating. Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat Recall
21 people in 13 states have laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella linked to a Malt-O-Meal Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall due to possible Salmonella contamination. The Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat recall involves unsweetened Puffed Rice and unsweetened Puffed Wheat Cereals produced with “Best If Used By” codes between April 8, 2008 (coded as “APR0808”) and March 18, 2009 (coded as “MAR1809”). Minnesota Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Frozen Chicken
Minnesota health and agriculture officials have two recent cases of salmonellosis (specifically Salmonella Enteritidis infection) in Minnesota have been linked to raw, frozen, breaded and pre-browned, stuffed chicken entrees. The implicated product is Milford Valley Farms Chicken Cordon Bleu with a stamped code of C8021. This product is sold at many different grocery store chains. Salmonella: Agropecuaria Montelibano Cantaloupe
March 22, 2008 - The FDA has issued an import alert regarding entry of cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano, a Honduran grower and packer, because, based on current information, fruit from this company appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada. Salmonella: Flying Tortilla Restaurant
According to New Mexico health officials, 4 people have been sickened in a Salmonella outbreak associated with the Flying Tortilla, a Santa Fe, New Mexico restaurant. E. coli Wrongful Death Settlement
As one of the leading food safety law firms in the United States, Pritzker | Ruohonen was contacted by a number of victims of the 2006 E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to spinach, including the family of the outbreak’s first fatality, a Wisconsin woman in her seventies. The woman was survived by three adult children and two grandchildren. Rochester Meat Recall - California and Wisconsin E. coli Outbreak
Rochester Meat Company has recalled about 188,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. At least 6 people have contracted E. coli O157:H7 infections associated with eating Rochester Meat Company ground beef served in restaurants and food service institutions in Wisconsin and California. Whittier Farms Milk and Possible Listeria Contamination
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has issued a warning regarding milk products from Whittier Farms in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts due to possible Listeria contamination. Three elderly men have died, an unborn baby has died and two other people have been sickened in a Listeria outbreak that has been associated with Whittier Farms milk. Jeno's and Totino's Pizza Recall
General Mills has recalled about 414,000 cases of Jeno's and Totino's Pizza because pepperoni on the pizzas may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. Learn more about the Jeno's and Totino's Pizza recall.
Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Banquet Pot Pies
At least 238 people in 34 states have Salmonella infections associated with ConAgra / Banquet pot pies. The CDC is warning consumers not to eat any Banquet pot pies or pot pies made by ConAgra that have a printed code ending in "P9." E. coli Outbread Linked to Sam's Club Hamburgers
Health officials in several states are investigating cases of E. coli O157:H7 infection associated with eating Cargill hamburger patties purchased from Sam’s Club stores in August and September. 5 people from Minnesota, 4 people from Wisconsin, 2 children from North Carolina, and 3 children from Tennessee have laboratory-confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 associated with the Cargill / Sam's Club hamburgers. Indiana: Galena Elementary School E.coli
There are now 7 confirmed cases and 6 probable cases of E. coli in Floyd County, Indiana. Most of the people sickened are elementary students who attend Galena Elementary School in Floyds Knobs, Indiana. Read more about the Galena Elementary School E. coli outbreak.
E. coli: Topps Hamburgers
Pritzker | Ruohonen is currently representing victims of E. coli outbreaks linked to ground beef products, including hamburgers. At least 30 cases of E. coli have been linked to Topps hamburgers. In response, Topps Meat Company has recalled approximately 21,700,000 pounds of hamburgers due to possible E. coli contamination. The recalled hamburger was distributed to food service institutions in the New York metropolitan area and to retail establishments nationwide, including the states of Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Rancherito E. coli Cases
Pritzker | Ruohonen is investigating what appears to be an E. coli outbreak associated with El Rancherito restaurant in Effingham, Illinois. E. coli: Piggly Wiggly Ground Beef Recall

E. coli: Stew Leonard's Ground Beef in Yonkers, New York
The Stew Leonard’s store in Yonkers, New York, has recalled 96% lean ground round because three people from one family have contracted E. coli O157:H7 infections associated with consuming ground beef sold at the store. Oregon and Washington E. coli: Ground Beef Sold at Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer
Pritzker | Ruohonen is monitoring the an E. coli outbreak linked to ground beef that is associated with 8 confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7. The ground beef was sold at Safeway, QFC, and Fred Meyer stores in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Idaho under the "Northwest Finest" brand name. Salmonella Senftenberg Outbreak Linked to Arby's Restaurant
Grant County Health District and their regional epidemiologist, with cooperation from the State Department of Health, have linked some of the reported 17 cases of Salmonella Senftenberg to the Arby’s Restaurant on Stratford Road in Moses Lake, Washington. Souplantation Shigella Outbreak
Pritzker | Ruohonen is investigation a Shigella outbreak that, according to health officials, is associated with the Souplantation restaurant in Pasadena, California. E. coli Cases in Suffolk County
Health officials have identified 7 cases of E. coli in Suffolk County, New York, that may be associated with undercooked ground beef. Botulism: Hot Dog Chili Sauce, Canned Chili and other Products

Taste of Chicago Salmonella Outbreak
Pritzker | Ruohonen is monitoring a Salmonella outbreak that has been linked to the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth at the Taste of Chicago. According to health officials, over 700 people have reported being sickened after eating at the Pars Cove booth. Salmonella poisoning is the likely cause. Jefferson County Jail E. coli Outbreak
About 70 inmates at the Jefferson County Jail in Golden, Colorado, have been sickened by E. coli. Jefferson County health officials are interviewing sickened inmates, testing samples of food and water, and reviewing food-handling procedures in an effort to find the source of the E. coli outbreak. E. coli Outbreak Linked to Little Rosie's Taqueria

May 14, 2007 - Health officials are still looking for the source of the Bakersfield, California, E. coli outbreak that has sickened 12 people, 11 of them children. Four of the children have been hospitalized with complications of E. coli O157:H7 infections, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the leading cause of kidney failure in children in the United States. E. coli Outbreak Linked to Hoss's Steak and Sea Restaurants and Recalled Beef
Pritzker | Ruohonen is monitoring the possible E. coli outbreak linked to Hoss's Steak and Sea Restaurants in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Steaks, ground beef patties, and other cuts of meat used at Hoss's Steak and Sea Restaurants were recalled due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. Souplantation E. coli Outbreak
California health officials have stated that seven people who ate at Souplantation in southern Orange County have contracted E. coli infections. Three of them were hospitalized. Taco Bell E. coli Outbreak
The Taco Bell-linked E. coli outbreak has sickened over 60 people in Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvnia, South Carolina and Utah. Connecticut is investigating reports of illness that may also be linked to Taco Bell restaurants. Several people have been hospitalized, including three children who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening illness. The first illness was reported on November 17, 2006. Taco Bell E. coli: Ground Beef, Green Onions or Lettuce?
Investigators continue to look for the source of the Taco Bell E. coli outbreak. Because of the widespread nature of the outbreak (there are now six states involved, Delaware , New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Utah), the most likely source of the Taco Bell E. coli outbreak is green onions, lettuce or ground beef. November 28, 2006 – Health officials are investigating a second Salmonella outbreak linked to tomatoes. This Salmonella outbreak sickened nearly 100 people in 19 states. According to health officials, it began in June and ended October 20, 2006. The strain of Salmonella involved in this outbreak was Salmonella Newport. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, nearly 1000 people in Iowa have contracted norovirus in the last several weeks. Possible California Listeria Outbreak

Detroit Food Poisoning: Roostertail Banquet Facility
Michigan health officials are investigating a food poisoning outbreak in Detroit that sickened at least 30 people who ate at Detroit’s Roostertail banquet facility. Tennessee Case of Spinach-Linked E. coli O157:H7
On September 22, 2006, the Tennessee Department of Health announced that a resident of Davidson County has been infected with E. coli O157:H7. This is the first confirmed case in Tennessee related to an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 associated with fresh spinach from a source in California. The Tennessee patient became ill on September 10. Ten people in the San Diego area have reported symptoms consistent with a Shigella infection (shigellosis), which include fever, watery or bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Salmonella Poisoning Outbreak Linked to Indiana Wal-Mart
Since late May, there have been at least 84 cases of Salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis) reported in Marion and surrounding counties in Indiana. Ten of those victims ended up in the hospital. A Cambridge, Ohio, toddler may have died from complications of an E. coli infection. According to a story in The Daily Jeffersonian, the Cambridge-Guernsey County Health Department is investigating three confirmed reports of E. coli affecting Guernsey County residents, including the case that reportedly claimed the life of the Cambridge toddler. August 24, 2006 - A break in the Minnesota investigation of the Longville E. coli outbreak occurred during a routine inspection of a meat processing plant. 4 Young Children Diagnosed with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome in Nebraska
(Updated information) - Four (4) children who attend Here Wee Grow day care center in Sidney, Nebraska, are being treated for hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening illness that destroys red blood cells and can cause kidney failure. June 9, 2006 - State of Connecticut health officials are looking into a possible food poisoning outbreak in Watertown, Connecticut, that may have sickened dozens of people, some seriously. On June 2, 2006, almost 200 people attended a wedding reception at the Grand Oak Villa banquet facility. People reportedly began getting sick about a day after the wedding reception. June 8, 2006 – Ashland County, Wisconsin, suspects an outbreak of Campylobacter that may be related to an unpasteurized dairy product. Milk Probable Source of Campylobacter in California Prisons
June 4, 2006 – It is not often that milk is the source of Campylobacter, but the California Department of Health Services is looking at milk as the only food item that could be connected to the Campylobacter outbreak that sickened over 1,300 inmates at 11 California prisons and other corrections facilities. However, investigators have not found Campylobacter in any of the milk samples or on the milk processing equipment at the Deuel Vocational Institution farm in Tracy, California, which supplies milk to California prisons, including those involved in the current outbreak.

June 2, 2006 – Food poisoning may have sickened nearly 100 guests at a wedding reception Saturday at Casa di Borally, a popular banquet hall in Richmond Heights, Ohio. 3 New Jersey Students Infected with Hepatitis A
May 11, 2006 – (New Jersey Star-Ledger) At least three students at an elementary school in Cranford have recently been infected with the hepatitis A virus, and health officials said yesterday they have not yet determined the source of the contamination. All of the students are 11-year-old female fifth-graders at the Orange Avenue School who be came ill last week. School Superintendent Lawrence Feinsod was cited as saying contamination through the handling of food in the school's cafeteria has been effectively ruled out because all of the victims are from the same grade, adding, "Had it come from the cafeteria, the contamination would have been more widespread throughout the school.
Food Source Found for Corky & Lenny's Salmonella Outbreak
(Updated information) The February 2006 Salmonella outbreak in Lansing, Michigan, has been linked to a liver sandwich served at an area restaurant Corky & Lenny's. The oil used to roll matzo balls and moisten the liver before serving also tested positive for Salmonella. Norovirus Outbreak at the Cascade Inn in Vancouver, Washington
April 10, 2006 – The Norovirus outbreak at the Cascade Inn retirement home in Vancouver, Washington, has sickened 100 people as of 10 a.m. today. This includes 68 residents, 23 staff, 8 members of American Medical Response, and one visitor. Food Poisoning Outbreak at Illinois School
January 19, 2006– The Peoria (Illinois) Journal Star reported that 35 children became ill after eating school cafeteria food. Only weeks before, 85 children in the same school district had also become ill after eating similar food at 5 elementary schools. Both incidents involved flour tortillas. On January 25, the FDA posted a press release announcing the voluntary recall of Del Rey flour tortillas.
