Personal Injury and Wrongful Death

August 2005 FDA Recalls

Our law firm is dedicated to informing the public about issues that affect people’s health. Every month the FDA issues recalls of dangerous and defective products. This month we also included an FDA safety alert of a product that has been linked to several serious injuries and deaths, the Prisma® continuous renal replacement system. The list below includes recalls of HOSTESS® oatmeal cookies, Lappert’s ice cream, Esh cream cheese, Allison’s Gourmet BBQ beans, and other food products. Our Senior Partner, Attorney Fred Pritzker, has had 30 years of experience helping people who have been injured by defective medical products and food poisoning. He has been recognized by his peers as a Super Lawyer, and selected for inclusion in the current edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

August 10, 2005 -- Lappert's Ice Cream, Inc. of Richmond, CA is recalling its 8 ounce, pint, 1.5 gallon and 3 gallon packages of ice cream, all flavors, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

People who have allergies to these undeclared ingredients run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the products. Some Prisma Renal Replacement Systems May Be Linked to Serious Injuries and Deaths
The following is not a recall, but a safety alert:

August 16, 2005 -- Gambro Dasco S.p.A, a production unit within Gambro Renal Products, announced today that it is issuing a worldwide Safety Alert for the Prisma® continuous renal replacement system (all catalog numbers). Gambro Dasco has become aware of several serious injuries and deaths relating to the use of its Prisma System. Potential Listeria Contamination Causes Recall of Allison’s Gourmet BBQ Beans
August 24, 2005 -- Allison's Gourmet Kitchens of Moore, Oklahoma is recalling BBQ Beans, because it has a potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Recall of Fancy Whole Basil Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising processors and repackers that Majestic International Spice Corporation of Montebello, CA, is voluntarily recalling its dried “Extra Fancy Basil” spice in 12.5 kilogram bags because FDA found the product contaminated with Salmonella Blockley. Salmonella is a well-known cause of both outbreaks and sporadic disease in various parts of the world and as such poses a potential health threat. FDA is issuing this advisory because we are concerned that the firm has not adequately alerted its consignees to the problem. Salmonella is a microorganism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the microorganism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
