Salmonella Diagnosis
There are two methods of Salmonella diagnosis:
- Laboratory Salmonella diagnosis from a stool sample
- Diagnosis based on Salmonella symptoms
Because many pathogens can cause diarrhea, fever, or abdominal cramps, clinical Salmonella bacteria identification requires laboratory tests of a stool sample from the infected person. Unless laboratory staff members are told to specifically look for Salmonella bacteria, these tests may not be performed. If Salmonella bacteria is found to be present in the stool, further tests are required to determine which type of Salmonella it is, and if necessary, what type of antibiotics should be used to treat the illness.
Salmonella Treatments: Fluids and Rest
In most cases, Salmonella poisoning runs its course in two to seven days. These cases only require a lot of fluids and rest. Clinical Salmonella treatments only become necessary if you or your family member becomes severely dehydrated or if the Salmonella bacteria infection spreads from the intestines into the blood.
Salmonella Treatments: Rehydration
If you or your family member has a Salmonella infection that includes severe diarrhea, you may need rehydration treatment, most often via an in-hospital intravenous drip. In the most severe cases of dehydration, or if the Salmonella infection spreads from the intestines to other parts of the body (most often the blood), antibiotic treatment may be necessary.
Salmonella Treatments: Antibiotics
The antibiotics most frequently used for Salmonella treatments are:
- Ampicillin
- Gentamicin
- Trimethoprim
- Sulfamethoxazole
- Ciprofloxacin
In recent years, physicians have noted more cases of Salmonella poisoning that are resistant to antibiotics. This is most likely the result of using antibiotics to promote the growth of feed animals.
