The illness that results from most types of Salmonella poisoning is characterized by diarrhea and intestinal symptoms. Diarrhea, an upset stomach and abdominal pains may result from an infection of this type. In some cases these Salmonella symptoms are accompanied by a mild fever.
The symptoms of Salmonella poisoning, particularly diarrhea, usually appear six to seventy-two hours after initial contact with the bacteria. The illness is usually mild enough so that no treatment is required, and passes in two to seven days.
If the Salmonella poisoning victims has a high fever, blood in the stools or severe dehydration, a doctor should be consulted. These cases may require hospitalization and antibiotics.
Salmonella victims can become seriously ill and die. We have handled several wrongful death cases and cases where the Salmonella victim survived but suffered permanent injury.
Salmonella Symptoms and Reiter’s Syndrome
Most people with diarrhea recover completely without treatment. However, in some cases Salmonellosis can lead to Reiter's syndrome. People with Reiter's syndrome develop joint pains, irritation of the eyes, and a painful sensation during urination. This condition can last for months or years. It sometimes leads to a difficult-to-treat case of chronic arthritis. Antibiotic treatment for the original Salmonella poisoning does not make a difference in the later development of arthritis.
Salmonella Symptoms and Typhoid
One type of Salmonella, Salmonella Typhi, can cause an illness called typhoid. Typhoid, characterized by a high fever, is life-threatening. The fever may be accompanied by a feeling of weakness, headache, and in some cases, rose-colored spots. Although typhoid fever is common in the developing world, there are only about 400 cases reported in the U.S. each year. The vast majority of those cases are acquired while traveling in foreign countries. There is a vaccine for typhoid fever that is recommended for people traveling to the developing world. People who are diagnosed with typhoid are given a treatment of antibiotics.
