Salmonella and Reiter’s Syndrome
Reiter’s syndrome is caused by an infection in the intestinal tract from eating food or handling substances that are contaminated with bacteria, often Salmonella. Reiter's syndrome is form of arthritis.  The Salmonella bacteria migrate from the digestive system to the body's joints and cause painful inflammation. The eyes, muscles, skin, and urinary tract can also become inflamed.  Inflamation of the eyes is called conjuncivitis.  Inflamation of the urinary tract is called urethritis, which can cause painful urination.  Learn about Salmonella urinary infections

Symtoms of Salmonella-associated Reiter’s syndrome:

  • Urinary urgency
  • Urethral discharge
  • Burning or stinging on urination
  • Redness of the eyes
  • Discharge from the eye
  • Burning eye pain
  • Joint pain in the large joints (hip pain, knee pain, and ankle pain are common)
  • Low back pain
  • Heel pain
  • Achilles tendon pain
  • Small, painless ulcers in the mouth, tongue, and penis
  • Skin lesions on the palms and soles that may resemble psoriasis 

Salmonella-associated Reiter’s syndrome may resolve in 3 to 4 months, but up to one-half of those affected experience recurrences or other symptoms of the disease over a period of several years.
