Detroit Food Poisoning: Roostertail Banquet

Michigan health officials are investigating a food poisoning outbreak in Detroit that sickened at least 30 people who ate at Detroit’s Roostertail banquet facility. Investigators are looking at the food served at the banquet to determine if this outbreak is part of the nationwide Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 172 people in 19 states. Based on interviews, federal and state investigators suspect tomatoes are the source of the nationwide Salmonella outbreak.

Confirming the source of a Salmonella poisoning (salmonellosis) outbreak involves testing food and water samples, interviewing people who got sick, testing stool samples and doing genetic fingerprinting. Often the source of the outbreak is never found.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning include: nausea, vomiting, cramps and other flu-like symptoms. Salmonella poisoning can lead to severe dehydration. The very young, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are most at risk for serious injury as a result of getting a Salmonella infection.
